ExaMail - Webmail

This guide provides detailed information on the required ports and server hostnames to configure email clients for ExaMail, along with step-by-step instructions for setting up common email clients.

General Email information

An email client is a software application that allows you to send, receive, and manage your emails on a computer or mobile device without using a web browser. It helps you organise your emails, sync them across different devices, and personalise the settings.

There are three main types of email clients: desktop, web-based, and mobile. Desktop clients, like Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, and Apple Mail, are installed on your computer. Web-based clients, such as Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Outlook, are used through a web browser and need an internet connection. They are handy for accessing emails on any device without installing software. Mobile clients, like the Gmail app, Outlook app, and Apple Mail app, are designed for smartphones and tablets, allowing you to check your emails on the go.

Email clients use two main methods to get your emails: IMAP and POP. IMAP keeps your emails on a server and lets you access them from multiple devices, with any changes (like reading or deleting emails) updating everywhere. POP downloads your emails to one device and usually deletes them from the server, which is good if you only use one device but not ideal if you want to access your emails from multiple devices. Understanding these options helps you choose the right email client and settings for your needs.
