On Sunday 1st May Exa took part in the first Bradford Super Soapbox Challenge.
It was a fantastic opportunity for companies in Bradford to raise money for charity, or just have fun with teammates.
During the week, we dedicated a meeting room to prepare. Staff from different departments committed their time to build the cart from scratch. Piles of newspaper were dipped in PVA to make a papier mache tower. Red and white paint, some MDF, wheels, and an old scooter later – we had a moving lighthouse!
Our Baywatch team gathered at around 8:30 in the morning, with body floats in hand, to take the cart down to Kirkgate to get set up in the pits for 9am.
The first cart set off at 11am, with our team having the 12th spot on the day – So we had time to watch some of the other fantastic carts. Some sped down, while others had a few false starts.

For our first run, we took to the ramp. In all, the time for the first run was 1 minute and 16 seconds. Once every team had their first run on the track, the band started for our dinner break.

Now we’d seen all the teams, we were determined to have a better run in the second round. We shaved 10 seconds off our time, with a finishing time of 1:06.
For our 3rd run all we wanted was to get round under 1 minute. We’d been so close in the second run. We took to the ramp, summoned our inner Hasselhoff… and we got 54 seconds!
We managed to beat our personal best, but the winners of the day were Green Arrows, who won with an amazing 34 seconds.

We were still proud of our effort and were happy to collect our medals at the end. The surprise came when the judges handed us the Most Innovative Cart Design Award.
We had a fantastic time taking part, it was lots of fun and the turnout was great.
If you want to see another local Super Soapbox Challenge, the next event is at Roundhay Park, Leeds on Sunday 14th August.
Thanks to our sponsors for helping us raise money for Marie Curie. We hope everyone enjoyed the event, roll on next year!
